Mazda is working on a new-generation BT-50, signalling a future for its midsize pickup beyond the current model. The replacement is expected to arrive by 2028, according to a report by Carscoops.

The company has not disclosed technical specifications, powertrains, dimensions or market plans for the next BT-50. That leaves open the central questions for pickup buyers: whether Mazda will pursue electrification, retain conventional combustion options, or offer a broader mix of propulsion technologies.

Mazda’s chief designer offered a brief but positive indication of the project, saying audiences should “look forward to it.” The comment suggests the next BT-50 is already part of Mazda’s longer-term product planning, although the manufacturer has yet to show a design preview or confirm a launch date.

The BT-50 will enter an increasingly competitive midsize pickup segment by the end of the decade. Mazda’s eventual approach to utility, towing capability, cabin technology and electrified powertrains will determine how distinct the new truck can be in a market shaped by both private buyers and commercial fleets.
