Tesla drivers can now use a new safety feature called Emergency Drive Away to leave a charging stop without completing the usual disconnect process. The function allows the vehicle to shift into Drive while disconnecting from its charging port.

According to a report by Car and Driver, the feature is intended for emergencies in which a driver needs to move the vehicle promptly.

The addition addresses a narrow but consequential scenario: an EV connected to a charger may not be able to depart as quickly as a driver needs under normal charging procedures. Emergency Drive Away provides a defined route to disengage the vehicle and leave.

For Tesla owners, fleet operators and charging-site managers, the feature adds another safety consideration to the charging experience. Drivers should treat it as an emergency measure rather than a substitute for standard charging disconnect procedures.

Independent reporting and verified telemetry.
