Tesla is bringing bidirectional charging to the Model 3 and Model Y, extending home-backup functionality to the brand's two volume-selling electric vehicles. The feature is being introduced as a rolling change rather than through a blanket retrofit.
The system, referred to by Tesla as Powershare Home Backup, allows energy stored in a vehicle battery to be used to supply a home. That vehicle-to-home, or V2H, capability can provide a practical backup-power role when paired with the necessary home equipment.
According to Car and Driver, the change is tied to an updated inverter for the Model 3 and Model Y. As a rolling production update, availability will depend on whether a specific vehicle has the revised hardware.
The move puts Tesla's mainstream models closer to EVs that can serve as energy assets beyond driving. For household buyers and fleet operators, V2H support could strengthen the case for an EV battery as part of a broader resilience and energy-management strategy, provided the vehicle and home installation are compatible.
