Audi has outlined a strikingly unconventional idea for electric vehicles: adding sensory drama to a powertrain defined by near-silent operation and smooth acceleration.

According to Car and Driver, the patent describes EV concepts capable of producing sparks and emitting smells. The proposal appears aimed at making electric driving feel more expressive for motorists who regard the absence of combustion-engine cues as a loss.

The filing should not be treated as evidence of an imminent production feature. Automakers regularly patent ideas that range from practical engineering solutions to speculative user-experience concepts, and a patent does not guarantee that a system will reach a showroom vehicle.

Still, the concept highlights a broader question facing the EV market: whether manufacturers should recreate elements of conventional motoring for emotional appeal, or use electrification to establish an entirely different driving identity.
