Toyota has revived a notorious 23-year-old destruction formula for the electric era, using an electric Hilux as the target for a falling caravan. The exercise deliberately recalls the kind of punishment once used to demonstrate the conventional pickup’s reputation for durability.

As Motor1 reports, the new stunt adapts the old Top Gear premise rather than presenting a routine product demonstration. The focus is less on laboratory-range figures or towing data than on whether an electrified workhorse can withstand a highly theatrical impact.

The choice of the Hilux carries particular weight. For decades, Toyota’s pickup has been marketed around resilience in demanding conditions, and any electric version will face the same expectations from commercial users and long-time owners. A dramatic impact test is an efficient way to connect that legacy with a powertrain transition that remains under scrutiny among utility-vehicle buyers.

Such a spectacle cannot replace formal safety, durability or fleet-operating assessments. But it underlines Toyota’s intent to frame electrification as compatible with rugged use — and to use one of motoring television’s most memorable destruction stunts to make that point.
