Rivian remains on course to introduce a new autonomy computer and lidar hardware this year. However, the technology will not be available to customers purchasing the R2 in the same timeframe, according to InsideEVs.
The distinction separates Rivian's planned hardware launch from its retail rollout on the R2. For buyers, the result is straightforward: the arrival of the underlying lidar and computing systems does not mean an immediate option to order them on the new electric SUV.
Lidar uses laser-based sensing to build a detailed view of a vehicle's surroundings and is widely regarded as a potentially valuable complement to cameras and radar in advanced driver-assistance systems. Its effectiveness, however, depends on the wider sensor suite, onboard computing and software development.
The delayed customer availability adds another timing consideration for prospective R2 owners and fleet operators assessing Rivian's future driver-assistance roadmap. Rivian's stated plan still puts its new autonomy hardware on the agenda for this year, but the R2's lidar-equipped version will arrive later.
