Volkswagen is advancing its European battery strategy with Gotion, the Chinese cell manufacturer, in a move aimed at bringing lithium iron phosphate batteries into its mass-market electric-vehicle line-up.
The companies plan to make LFP battery cells through joint ventures, according to InsideEVs. The arrangement adds a Chinese partner to Volkswagen's effort to secure battery technology and manufacturing capacity for its EV expansion.
LFP chemistry is generally valued for its lower cost and durability compared with other lithium-ion battery types. Its growing role in affordable EVs has made it increasingly relevant for manufacturers seeking to reduce battery costs without relying solely on more energy-dense chemistries.
For Volkswagen, the planned partnership signals a pragmatic route to scaling lower-cost battery supply for high-volume models in Europe. It also underlines the continued importance of Chinese battery expertise as European carmakers build out their own electrification supply chains.
